Our Story

I was barely 16 years old when I embarked on my first BIG solo trip. It was also my first time on a commercial flight and my first time over seas. As a foreign exchange student, I was leaving a small town in North East Ohio and going to a small mountain town in Southern Italy.

My mother, slightly apprehensive, filled my head with last minute advice. Including, “Read the signs and watch where people go.” Both of my parents gave me lots of great traveling advice over the years. That particular piece of advice has stuck with me and kept me clear of trouble. It has also opened many doors to an education that can not compare to sitting at a desk.

Traveling is, indeed, the best education an individual can acquire. Delving into other cultures, visiting historical sites, gazing upon great artworks, saturating yourself in natural wonders, asking strangers what they know about a place they live in . . . You learn an immeasurable amount about yourself and grow immensely as you are stretched in the unfamiliar. You also engage all of your senses as you obtain first hand knowledge of every subject matter any book could ever offer.

It is our goal, through Beyond Road Signs, to provide an avenue for sharing the beautiful aspects of our existence with each other. It is not enough to just read the road signs that are offered here. Watch where people go, then investigate those places for yourself. The content on Beyond Road Signs is intended to compel you to appreciate the small pieces of a big picture. We do not have to travel far for the world to be our classroom. Wherever our backyard is, there is something to learn.

Next time you are on a road trip, remember to read the signs and watch where people go. Do not just stop at the road signs, go beyond the road signs and revel in the tangible world that has been given to us. Then tell your story and share what you have discovered.

There is plenty to see at the Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas Markets) in Nuremberg, Germany. Handmade ornaments, all sorts of gifts and treats. Everything is intricately decorated. There are carolers and musicians playing classic hymns. It is a delight. Though I had never experienced anything like the Christkindlesmarkt, a warm nostalgia swept over me.

Sandhill Cranes, a Gift to Savor

Sandhill Cranes have become some what common place to me, as have Great Blue Herons and Bald Eagles. Once upon a time, not that long ago, it was a celebrated moment to witness one of these rare birds. Be careful not to take for granted the gifts that we have. It is important to relish the simple things that happen often. Daily news reports remind us that life is fragile and precarious. It is a blessing to be given beautiful gifts. Even small ones. Take great care to not squander any good thing.

Good for the Goose

a friend called me. He had been bird watching in an infrequented area. While there, he observed that a live goose was caught in a muskrat trap. The season for trapping muskrats ended over a month ago. It was unlikely that a trapper would be by to take responsibility for this animal. So, my conscientious friend tried to reach the goose in order to set it free. However, the goose eluded him.
