Flossenbürg in Germany

Flossenbürg is a small town in eastern Bavaria near the Czech border. There is a small castle ruins here and the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp; where the remaining members of the Valkyrie plot to kill Hitler were executed just two weeks before the camp was liberated. One of these men was Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

I find this camp very interesting because as many have heard, most Germans claimed to have no knowledge of the death camps.  After seeing Buchenwald purposely being remote, so the townspeople could not see, it made sense. Yet, Flossenbürg is quite literally in the center of town. This infuriated the U.S. Soldiers when they liberated the camp and forced the townspeople to carry all the dead bodies and bury them in their town graveyard.

I lead a trip for fellow Service Members here about the life and ethical decisions of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.  It was solemn experience.
