Many Troy Township residents have fond memories of parades on Highway Route 422, tractor pulls and playful contests at Troy Homecomings past. This homecoming is not a high school dance (though you could dance to live music throughout the weekend). Rather, it is a century old, free, community festival held annually in southern Geauga County in Ohio. According to local historians, Troy Homecoming started in 1911 when the township celebrated its 100th birthday. Over the course of time, interest and wo/man power fizzled out to the point of Troy Homecoming extinction. In 2012, when Troy Township was preparing to celebrate its bicentennial, locals rekindled this endeared tradition.

Troy Homecoming is held the first weekend of August at Troy Community Center (13950 Main Market Road; Welshfield, Ohio). A team of community oriented people, businesses and organizations have joined forces to provide this free, family friendly event. There are plenty of activities and entertainment for all ages to enjoy. Do not miss the very funny Mr. Best Legs Contest. There are Horseshoe and Cornhole Competitions. Jungle Terry will excite the youngsters. If you are a runner, you will want to participate in the 5K Road Apple Run, early Sunday morning. (Visit www.TroyHomecoming.org to see this year's entertainment schedule.)

There is so much going on throughout the weekend. For instance, the Troy Township Volunteer Fire Department offer health and wellness checks (blood pressure, glucose, etc.). In addition, the fire department will be demonstrating some of their skills and giving spectators opportunity for hands on experiences. Join your neighbors in Sunday’s home-cooked community dinner (traditionally they have fried chicken with all the fix in’s), watch hot air balloon launches (weather permitting) and hear some bagpipers play. Kids can bring their bicycles, decorate them at homecoming, then ride them in the parade.

Troy Homecoming is an annual community festival in Troy Township aka Welshfield, Ohio (northeastern Ohio). Local balloonist was kind enough to launch a hot air balloon during our festivities.

All of this fantastic fun could not be had without the endurance of volunteers and the resources provided by sponsors. This community is thankful for the hardworking and dedicated individuals who make this free event possible. We urge you to take a look at Troy Homecoming’s website.
