Savenac Historic Tree Nursery in Haugan, Montana
/Both of my parents were foresters. Few of you may be familiar with the 1900s style and smell associated with the forest service and national parks of North America. I grew up with Smokey Bear posters identifying various woodland sights and creaking, hollow wooden floorboards leading into office spaces dappled with green vinyl chairs. When I saw a sign for “Historic Tree Nursery” along Interstate 90 between Missoula, Montana and the Idaho state line, my heart went a flutter. I have toured countless nurseries and I most definitely wanted to visit a historical tree nursery.
We exited at Haugan, Montana and immediately saw the signs for Savenac Historic Tree Nursery. It was not even a quarter mile from the exit. There was a great deal of wildfire smoke in the air and it gave the place a dreamy look. We went in the visitors’ center and read through some of the history. There was not an entrance fee, but a place for donations. The lady at the front desk was cheerful and answered our questions.
From there we walked a short loop around the grounds. Generally, the buildings are open for a self-guided tour. However, the grounds had been rented for a family reunion. Intriguing. Apparently, you can rent a house, bunkhouse, or cookhouse for a very fair rate. (Savenac Bunkhouse - https://www.recreation.gov/camping/savenac-bunkhouse/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=75277, Savenac Cookhouse - https://www.recreation.gov/camping/savenac-cookhouse/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=75285, Savenac West Cottage - https://www.recreation.gov/camping/savenac-west-cottage/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=75284.)
While touring the historic grounds, we were not able to go inside the buildings (due to the family reunion), but they looked charming from the outside. The buildings have electricity, running water, beds and kitchens (if I am remembering correctly, you might want to double check if you decide to make reservations). I would like to revisit and see the inside of the buildings for myself.
Whether you are staying in Haugan or simply passing through, the Savenac Historic Tree Nursery is a nice place to visit. It is nothing spectacular, but certainly a charming place to stretch your legs and learn a bit of local history. And for some, like me, it is a nostalgic visit, reminding folks of conservation and tree plantings. Learn more at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/lolo/specialplaces/?cid=stelprdb5086977.
