Medieval Festival in Vilseck, Germany
/Living history can be found in medieval festivals throughout Germany during the warmer months. Travel back to the times of nobles roaming castle grounds. Depending on which festival you attend, you may see knights in full armor jousting and sword fighting, fire shows, musicians, acrobats, jesters and dancers.
There may be opportunity for you to ride small wooden carousels, take a horse ride or try your hand at medieval games such as archery, etc. Smaller festivals have less entertainment, but maintain a historic romance. Artisans sell their wares in stalls, some giving demonstrations on traditional craftsmanship. You may find drinking horns, jewelry, art, weaponry and household goods to purchase for a souvenir.
Feel free to dress for the era. Dedicated attenders come dressed in medieval garb and will even camp out at the festival’s site, living as they would in the 13th century.
Food vendors serve bratwurst, suckling pig, grilled fish and fire-roasted chicken. And, oh yes, mead, beer and wine. There is often an entrance fee for the festival and you may have to pay a bit for parking.
